Das Rumänische Kulturinstitut in Berlin freut sich, in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Verein Galeria Artep, die Solo-Präsentation Imago Mundi. Of Margins and Other Heroes des Künstlers Nicu Ilfoveanu im Rahmen des EMOP Berlin 2025–European Month of Photography vorzustellen.

Nicu Ilfoveanu ist ein Künstler, der sich gleichermaßen mit sozio-dokumentarischen Aspekten sowie den theoretischen und ästhetischen Dimensionen des Bildes beschäftigt. Seine Praxis bewegt sich in einem dynamischen Spannungsfeld zwischen dem Unvorhergesehenen und dem Absichtlichen, der Reportage und dem Persönlichen, dem Sichtbaren und dem Verborgenen, und enthüllt das Erhabene im Alltäglichen. Mit dem Projekt Imago Mundi führt er uns durch vielschichtige Bildkonstellationen, die tiefgreifende Fragen über kulturelle Kontinuität und Brüche, kollektives Gedächtnis und Identitätsbildung aufwerfen.

Nicu Ilfoveanu erschafft sein eigenes imaginäres Museum und bewahrt dabei eine tiefe Faszination für die Ideen- und Themenwelt der Bildkultur, ohne deren Frische und Relevanz zu verlieren. Die Ausstellung vereint Bilder aus mehrteiligen dokumentarischen und konzept-orientierten Projekten, die der Künstler kontinuierlich in seiner Praxis aufgreift und vertieft. Sie rückt grundlegende Überlegungen zu seiner Motivwahl und Methodik in den Fokus und vermittelt dabei ein nuanciertes Verständnis über die Rolle und Bedeutung der Fotografie in der Gegenwartskunst.

Im Laufe der Jahre hat Nicu Ilfoveanu einen subtilen Atlas erschaffen, der die Ästhetik des Alltags im heutigen Rumänien einfängt. Imago Mundi verwebt das Malerische und Intime mit der mythischen Welt der Jahrmärkte. So entsteht eine dokumentarische Meta-Erzählung, die sich auf Ikonografien und Geografien bezieht, die nur am Rande entstehen: an den Grenzen der Städte, des kollektiven Bewusstseins und der modernen Zivilisation, wie wir sie kennen.

In diesem symbolträchtigen Raum stellt der Künstler die zentrale Frage: Was bildet den Mittelpunkt der Welt? Die stimmungsvollen Landschaften und Genrebilder der ländlichen Märkte dienen als lebendige Orte der Gemeinschaftsbindung und des sozialen Austauschs. Zugleich rufen die einfühlsamen Darstellungen unbeachteter lokaler Held*innen die Anmut der heroischen Porträtkunst wach und verorten den Begriff des ´Anderen` im erweiterten kulturellen und kunsthistorischen Kontext.

Mit Imago Mundi blicken wir in den Spiegel einer unerforschten Welt. Der Künstler erweckt ihr verborgenes Leben und hinterfragt dabei die gängigen Vorstellungen von Zeit, Raum und Identität, um die Kluft zwischen Zentrum und Peripherie zu überbrücken.

The Romanian Cultural Institute in Berlin is pleased to present, in collaboration with the Galeria Artep Association, the solo exhibition Imago Mundi. Of Margins and Other Heroes by artist Nicu Ilfoveanu as part of EMOP Berlin 2025 – European Month of Photography. Nicu Ilfoveanu is an artist whose work equally explores socio-documentary themes as well as the theoretical and aesthetic dimensions of the image. His practice navigates a dynamic interplay between the unforeseen and the deliberate, the observational and the personal, the evident and the hidden—revealing the sublime within the mundane. With Imago Mundi, the artist guides us through complex constellations of images that raise profound questions about cultural continuity and ruptures, collective memory, and identity formation. Nicu Ilfoveanu constructs his own ´imaginary museum´ by delving deeply into ideas and motifs throughout visual culture, while preserving their relevance and freshness for today´s topics. The exhibition brings together images from diverse documentary and conceptually driven projects that the artist continuously explores and refines in his practice. It highlights fundamental reflections on his choice of subjects and methodology, offering a nuanced understanding of the role and significance of photography in contemporary art.

Over time, Nicu Ilfoveanu has been creating a subtle atlas that captures the aesthetics of daily life in present-day Romania. Imago Mundi weaves together the picturesque and the intimate with the myth-laden world of county fairs. The result is a documentary meta-narrative that focuses on iconographies and geographies that only emerge at the ´margins´: the fringes of cities, collective consciousness, and modern civilization as we know it.

In this symbolically charged space, the artist sheds new light on the essential question: what constitutes the centre of the world? The evocative landscapes and genre scenes of rural fairs serve as vibrant sites of community bonding and social exchange. At the same time, the sensitive portrayals of unsung local heroes evoke the grandeur of heroic portraiture, recontextualising the concept of the ´other´ in broader cultural and art-historical discourses.

With Imago Mundi, we gaze into the mirror of an unexplored world. Reclaiming its hidden life, the artist challenges dominant perceptions of time, space, and identity, while seeking to bridge the divide between centre and periphery.
